There is no shortage of information about jobs, work and employment on the Internet. However the volume of information and the number of sites can actually make finding specific information quite difficult. Below is a short list of sites focused on information about work and employment in Ontario. We hope this list will help you to find relevant information quickly.

The Workers section of the Service Canada site provides comprehensive information about labour standards, province by province in the following areas: Workers rights: Benefits; Workplace issues; Trade Unions

The Learning Edge – Ontario

The Learning Edge is a very well known Canadian online newspaper (produced by the Wellington County Learning Centre in Ontario) designed specifically for adult literacy students. Of the 8 issues of The Learning Edge published so far 3 are focused on workplace issues and activities. Issues 6 and 7 contain items that are particularly relevant to adult literacy students and instructors working on Numeracy. Issue 6 has features on how to check the accuracy of a pay cheque and how to evaluate Pay Day loans. Issue 7 has a feature on Money Math focused on the Essential Skills used by taxi drivers.

Skillswise – U.K.

Skillswise is a content rich site developed by the BBC in England. The numeracy section is excellent providing a wide range of activities for all learning levels, covering Whole Numbers, Measures Space and Shape, Fractions Decimal and Percentages and Handling Data. Each learning activity has a Factsheet, Quiz, Games and a printable worksheet. This is a very useful site for instructors and students providing easy to use learning activities for all learning levels. The only caveat is the money math section which is not appropriate for Canadian students as it based on the currency of the U.K

This is an excellent numeracy resource site from Australia. It is intended for use by students in vocational training programs and offers practical, clear, easy to use printable resources. The site is also a source of material for lesson planning, the language of the site presents a slight challenge, e.g. the use of “maths” for math – but this is largely compensated for by the high quality of the content.

We all encounter a wide range of documents and require a range of writing skills in the workplace.

“Writing at work” involves a spectrum of writing skills, e.g. spelling, grammar and punctuation, and a range of document use skills, understanding the purpose of documents such as reporting forms, logs, and timesheets.
We have divided the web sites below into 3 broad categories: Background (links to research findings about workplace writing and document use); Authentic Workplace Documents (where to find them and how to make best use of them) and Writing Mechanics & Fluency (Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation and Writing Practice). These categories reflect the complexities of teaching writing for the workplace.
